Two French inmates surrendered Monday after a failed attempt to escape from prison with weapons dropped from a hijacked helicopter, police said. The prisoners at the high-security Fresnes prison, south of Paris, surrendered separately and released the two remaining officers they had taken hostage on Sunday, according to police. The pair took three officers hostage Sunday afternoon after the helicopter dropped weapons into the exercise yard. One officer was released Sunday, and a fourth officer was critically injured during the escape attempt. The two prisoners were equipped with a bulletproof vest, an automatic pistol and an assault rifle, officials said. About 60 members of an elite police squad were posted inside the prison during negotiations by police and regional officials. The wife of at least one of the hostage-takers tried overnight to coax the pair to turn themselves in. After one prisoner gave up, the other remained holed up with arms for nearly two more hours before surrendering. At one point Sunday night, there were fears of a riot among the 1,800 prisoners at Fresnes. About 300 of them refused to return to their cells and called for a revolt. By early Monday morning, all had been returned to their cells, prison officials said. Police continued to search for the accomplices who hijacked the helicopter, which was found abandoned at a sports stadium near the town of Fresnes with blood stains inside it. |
