Juveniles Surrender After Nev. Standoff

Teen-age inmates climbed through air-conditioning ducts to a rooftop at a maximum-security juvenile prison last week during a standoff with prison officers.
The 20 boys on the roof surrendered about 21/2 hours after disturbance began at the correctional facility outside Las Vegas.
They brandished metal pieces dismantled from the air-conditioning, but carried no weapons, said Willie Smith, deputy Nevada Department of Youth Services administrator. The prison was locked down later that evening.
Las Vegas police fired beanbag projectiles but no live bullets after being summoned to the site. Officers also fired tear gas, said Officer Steve Meriwether, a crisis negotiator.
He said some inmates complained of eye, nose and throat irritation and others had cuts and scrapes. No serious injuries were reported.
It was unclear what sparked the incident, but heat might have helped end it. Midday temperatures were over 100 degrees. Teens on the roof of the low-slung detention building stripped off their T-shirts in the blazing sun and wore them on their heads before surrendering.
The Summit View Youth Correctional Center housed 68 teens at the time at the time of the incident. The privately managed 96-bed state prison is intended for the most serious teen-age offenders in Nevada.
