The nation's largest roof-mounted solar array, being installed atop Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail, was previewed recently by Alameda County's Supervisors and the county's General Services Agency. The 500 kilowatt solar array -- designed, manufactured and installed by PowerLight Corp. of Berkeley, California -- is already partially up and running and will be completed in late July. This ambitious solar deployment, performed in conjunction with various energy efficiency projects completed by CMS Viron, was commissioned to help Alameda County achieve its goals of reducing and stabilizing future energy costs. 'Over the past several years, Alameda County has reduced electricity use by more than 30 percent -- and we save more than $4 million every year by doing so,' said Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, President of the Board of Supervisors. 'Alameda County is taking a leadership role in energy conservation. We are extremely committed to adopting smart, innovative technologies to reduce our energy consumption and save taxpayer dollars. Deploying solar power and making county facilities more energy efficient are key components of our overall energy strategy.' 'We estimate that Alameda County will save millions of dollars in electricity costs as a result of adopting solar power,' said Alameda County General Services Agency Director Aki Nakao. 'By installing PowerLight's PowerGuard(R) system at the Santa Rita Jail, we are taking an important step to reduce costs, reduce pollution and conserve natural resources. The unique attributes of a PowerGuard(R) solar installation will not only supply us with clean power, but will also result in lower heating and air conditioning costs as well.' This project is the first of many anticipated solar installations on Alameda County's buildings. The Alameda County project takes a two-fold approach to reducing the Santa Rita Jail's electric utility bill. First, clean energy is generated through a giant 500 Kilowatt PowerGuard(R) solar installation consisting of approximately 4,000 roof tiles. The panels will significantly reduce Santa Rita Jail's monthly electric bill by displacing utility electricity -- and its resulting pollution -- with clean, on-site solar power. Second, the overall need for electricity at the facility will be dramatically reduced through a combination of added insulation from the solar roof tiles and a comprehensive upgrade to the jail's central plant, including state-of-the-art cooling equipment and controls. The project, which will be completed in late July, will result in the annual generation of over 650,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy, and reduce the jail's electrical need by 890,000 kilowatt-hours annually. 'It's great to be part of a project that's environmentally friendly and saves taxpayers money. We admire Alameda County for its vision in initiating this economical and environmentally friendly energy approach,' said PowerLight President and CEO Tom Dinwoodie. 'When it's completed, the Santa Rita project will be the largest rooftop solar electric installation in the United States.' |
