Two days after 106 inmates used a tunnel to pull off the biggest escape from Latin America's largest prison, authorities in Sao Paulo found another underground escape route from the Carandiru complex. Prison officials said on Wednesday the new tunnel, discovered by officers on Tuesday night, led from the hospital unit of the overcrowded prison toward the sewage system that starts beyond the prison's walls. The tunnel was unfinished. Sao Paulo Penitentiary Secretary Nagashi Furukawa, who inspected the tunnel, said on television that no one had escaped this time from the prison, located just blocks from the financial heart of Brazil's most populous city. Police have seized only 29 of the 106 inmates who escaped on Sunday in broad daylight during visiting hours from Carandiru's Detention Center. Officials earlier said 105 had escaped. Police said the tunnel had been dug from the outside and was reinforced with wooden pillars and cement. The last escapee to be nabbed had been wandering in the sewage system for two days and nights, local media said. The mass escape was the latest incident at the penitentiary that was the scene of Brazil's worst prison massacre in 1992. Last February, Carandiru prisoners used smuggled cellular phones to mastermind Brazil's largest prison rebellion, involving some 29,000 inmates across the state, drawing attention to inhumane conditions and inadequate security. Authorities plan to demolish Carandiru's Detention Center next year. The prison complex houses some 9,500 inmates in often squalid conditions. |
