A former Florida death row inmate won a new sentence of life in prison for the shooting death of an elderly woman. Jurors deliberated for five hours before reaching their decision recently on the fate of Keydrick Jordan, 29. Seven years ago, Jordan was sentenced to death for the August 1992 murder of Ann Mintner, 76, who shot as she walked around Lake Davis. The Florida Supreme Court upheld Jordan's conviction but said he deserved a new sentencing hearing because the trial judge allowed two witnesses to testify improperly. In the new hearing, defense attorneys presented evidence that Jordan had brain damage and was sexually, physically and emotionally abused as a child. Testimony showed he was forced to participate in voodoo rituals and watched his stepfather kill a man. Mintner's family was not present for the jury's decision. Circuit Judge Anthony Johnson ordered Jordan to finish a 25-year sentence for the murder of another woman, 77-year-old Thelma Reed, before beginning a life sentence for Mintner's death. He will not be eligible for parole for at least 45 years. |
