| Jail Escapee Reportedly Reneges On Promise |

Authorities were prepared for jail escapee Kevin Pullum to surrender late Monday night, but the con never showed up. A man identifying himself as Pullum apparently contacted local television station NBC4 and told them that he would turn himself in on the condition that weatherman Christopher Nance were present to witness the surrender. 'The station contacted us around 9 p.m. and said that he was ready to surrender and this and that,' L.A. County sheriff's deputy Margarita Velazquez told Channel 2000. 'We in turn called everybody and told them to get down there.' News crews swarmed to the intersection of El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne, the location of the sheriff's command post. But after several hours, it became evident that Pullum had no intention of giving up. The convict's sister, Jerryle Bradley, has been publicly appealing to her brother to stop running. Bradley told CBS 2 News Monday that she fears the worst will happen if Pullum doesn't end his flight from justice. 'I know Kevin, and I know the type of person he is,' she said. 'I know that he will not go freely; he will put up a fight and the police will shoot him down.' Law enforcement officials converged on Bradley's Hawthorne neighborhood early Monday after she told them her brother had come to her front door pleading for money and 'help.' 'I told him to leave and that he should turn himself in,' Bradley said. The Hawthorne woman feels strongly that the longer her brother's on the street, the greater the chances are that he will end up in a deadly confrontation with police. 'I feel that it's the police's fault that he got out in the first place,' she said. 'They messed up and let him walk off.' Pullum waltzed out of the Men's Central Jail downtown on July 6. Surveillance tapes show the convict wearing civilian clothes as he makes his way to an elevator that would carry him to the first floor and freedom. It's believed that Pullum used fake identification to get past officers. Perhaps most embarrassing for the sheriff's department is that the picture on the ID card that he used is said to be that of Eddie Murphy as 'Dr. Doolittle.' L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca has vowed to utilize all available resources to catch the escapee. Hours before his escape, Pullum had been convicted of attempted murder for shooting a man six times in a 1999 drug deal gone sour. The convict has three strikes against him in the criminal justice system, so he's facing possible life imprisonment. According to authorities, Pullum should be considered armed and dangerous. |
