A man convicted of attempted murder and facing a possible life prison term walked out of a downtown Los Angeles jail with a fake identification card that reportedly contained a photo of actor Eddie Murphy.
Kevin Jerome Pullum, 31, vanished July 6 shortly after being checked into county jail following his conviction in court of shooting a man six times in 1999.
Security cameras videotaped Pullum as he walked out of a building adjoining the jail by posing as a civilian employee with a fake identification card, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said recently.
A prison informant told police Pullum, who had represented himself in court and had access to office supplies and machines, put a picture of Murphy taken from an advertisement for the movie 'Dr. Doolittle 2' on the card, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Videotape from the security cameras show Pullum walking out of an elevator in a flowered shirt and light pants with an ID badge dangling from his neck.
Police believe Pullum was able to keep the civilian clothing he wore in court under his prison uniform, which he apparently dumped somewhere along a tunnel that connects an inmate reception area to an adjoining building.
Pullum, who has two prior convictions, was due to return to Van Nuys Superior Court this week for sentencing.
