A former correction officer has been indicted on rape and sodomy charges for an alleged sexual assault of an inmate who became pregnant. The charges against Peter Zawislak, 29, stem from at least eight incidents with the inmate at Bayview Correctional Facility in New York City from April 1999 until last May, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said. Zawislak, now an urban park ranger for New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation, was a state correction officer from June 1996 until last May, when he resigned during an investigation of his activities. Prison officials began investigating Zawislak after learning that the inmate was expecting a child. The woman, who was not identified, is now six months pregnant. Zawislak, who was arrested Wednesday, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan. If convicted, he would face up to four years in prison. |
