The Allegheny County Jail's CERT Unit is on hold for the moment as officers quit their voluntary posts last week to protest a lack of equipment. All 70 members quit their CERT positions but kept their posts as officers. Jail major Istvan Balogh said that without CERT, trouble could be ahead. 'And I've had two surgeries because of not having a CERT team, so the chance of officers getting injured while rushing into an incident because they're not trained is very high,' he said. The disbanding of the CERT team is just the latest incident in a summer of troubles at the jail including the firing of a health officials after syringes and prescription drugs were reportedly found in his desk drawer. Jail officer union president Chuck Mandarino also refused to speak with Team 4 about the CERT team quitting. The union is apparently working with management to find grant funds that would purchase new equipment for the CERT team. |
