David Kaczynski, the brother of convicted Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, has been named executive director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty, a group affiliated with Catholic Charities. David Kaczynski, an anti-death penalty activist for several years, in 1998 helped broker a last-ditch plea bargain to save his brother from a death sentence. Since then, David Kaczynski and his wife, Linda, have lobbied against capital punishment and the execution of mentally ill convicts. The Kaczynskis notified the FBI in 1996 when they suspected Ted might be the Unabomber -- a secretive, anti-technology figure believed responsible for a series of mail bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others over 17 years. The information they provided helped federal authorities capture Ted Kaczynski in his Montana shack. He is serving a life term in prison. The Web site says David Kaczynski has spent his career in social work, counseling troubled teens from diverse backgrounds. |
