Former New York mob boss John Gotti, who is in the advanced stages of throat cancer, has been removed from his prison cell and taken to a local hospital. Springfield, Missouri TV station KYTV reported Thursday that Gotti's condition had worsened and he was resting at St. John's Regional Health Center after being taken from the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners. KYTV did not identify its sources. Lewis Kasman, a close friend of Gotti, confirmed that he was taken to the hospital but said he did not believe the move indicated any drastic change in Gotti's health, the Daily News of New York reported Friday. Gotti's lawyer, Joseph Corozzo, said in April that Gotti was in the advanced stages of throat cancer. The 60-year-old had a cancerous tumor removed from his neck in 1998. Once known as the 'Teflon Don'' after a series of courtroom acquittals, Gotti was convicted of racketeering and six killings by a federal jury in 1992. His victims included "Big Paul'' Castellano, whom he then succeeded as boss of New York's Gambino crime family in 1985. |
