| Jail Escapes Lead to Killing |

A jail trusty and two convicts escaped in separate incidents in Arkansas Thursday, and the trusty apparently walked to a officer's nearby home and killed him while stealing his truck, authorities said. The man suspected in the slaying and one of the convicts were recaptured. Barry L. Parrish, 37, escaped from the Lafayette County Jail in Lewisville, 120 miles southwest of Little Rock. On Thursday morning, the body of officer George H. Turner, who lived a mile from the jail, was found. The coroner said only that a weapon was involved in the death; he would not release further details. Parrish was arrested on a fugitive warrant about noon in Shreveport, La., near where Turner's truck was found, Sheriff Sam Pierson said. Parrish, who was jailed on a parole violation, was a trusty allowed to stay in an unlocked room rather than a cell and wear street clothes. Deputies wouldn't say Thursday whether two doors leading outside were locked as they were supposed to be. At a state prison in Varner, about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock, two inmates feigned illness and jumped an officer. Joseph D. Davis, 39, and Bobby R. Green, 51, stole the officer's truck and kidnapped an off-duty corrections officer and his daughter, a prison spokeswoman said. The hostages were found unharmed. Davis was captured two hours after the escape. Green was still missing Thursday afternoon. Both were serving time for aggravated robbery. |
