A former prison captain pleaded guilty Thursday to having sex with child killer Susan Smith and was sentenced to five years' probation. Alfred Rowe Jr. entered the plea to a charge of having sexual intercourse with an inmate. Smith is serving a life sentence for drowning her two sons in a lake in 1994. Rowe could face up to 10 years in prison if he violates his probation. Rowe and Smith had sex at the Women's Correctional Institute in the summer of 2000. Rowe was the night shift supervisor at the Columbia prison. Smith has since been moved to another prison. Rowe, 40, apologized to his wife of 20 years and to his parents. He was fired from the Corrections Department. ''No one else is to blame, and I regret the hardship I caused everyone including my family,'' Rowe said. Circuit Judge Casey Manning said he took into consideration that the sex was consensual. ''I can see the painful expression on your face and on the faces of your family,'' Manning said. ''You've paid a debt in this case far greater than any sentence of this court.'' Rowe is the second former officer to admit having sex with Smith. Houston Cagle pleaded guilty last month and is awaiting sentencing. Smith's 3-year-old and 14-month-old sons drowned in 1994 after she let her car roll into a lake. She first had claimed the boys had been taken in a carjacking, begging tearfully on television for their return. Nine days later she confessed. The revelations that South Carolina's most famous inmate had sex behind bars led to a broad investigation into prison misconduct. More than a dozen Corrections Department officers and employees have been charged with having sex with inmates or smuggling drugs. |
