Four jail officers, including the warden, have been fired in connection with the strip-searches of several middle school students being given a tour as a warning against bad behavior. The officers 'exercised extremely poor judgment,' abused their authority and violated department policy, said Odie Washington, director of the District of Columbia Corrections Department. Washington also said Warden Patricia Britton, a 19-year veteran, failed to follow up on the allegations after the incident was first reported by an officer who complained about the strip-searches. Nine boys from Evans Middle School in Washington said they were strip- searched during the tour on May 17. The students were visiting the jail as part of an in-school suspension because of misconduct. A school official has said it isn't yet clear if their behavior at the jail prompted teachers to request the search. At least one school official is on administrative leave because of the incident. The FBI is investigating the searches. The correction officers fired were Dexter Allen, Jerome West and Karl White. All three have served at least 13 years with the department. Washington says the department will no longer allow middle school students to participate in jail visits. He says it will be limited to high school and college students once the program is reinstated. Meanwhile, families of some female students who allege they were strip-searched on a May 18 tour plan to file a lawsuit against the city. Attorney Wayne Cohen said Tuesday that he will seek $4 million dollars in damages for each child. |
