An officer at High Desert State Prison was in critical condition Monday with multiple skull fractures after an inmate attack, prison officials said. The 4,293 inmates at the maximum-security prison near Susanville remained locked in their cells following the incident. Officer Karen Fobes, 43, was in intensive care at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. She was taken there by helicopter after she was attacked about 3:30 p.m. Sunday by 25-year-old Damon Deshawn Evans, who balked at returning to his cell after a shower, corrections officials said. Evans allegedly hit Fobes on the face, knocking her to the concrete floor, then stomped on her face twice, according to an incident report released by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association. She triggered her personal alarm, but one of Evans' fellow gang members, Martin Ray Watkins, 30, attacked the two officers who responded, said Youth and Adult Correctional Agency spokesman Steve Green. Officers Margo Carpenter, 34, and Richard Harcourt, 23, were treated for cuts and abrasions at Lassen County Hospital in Susanville and released Sunday night, said prison spokesman Lt. Chuck Spirk. The incident ended after a fourth officer in a watchtower shot Evans in the back with a rubber bullet about the size of a golf ball. Both inmates sat down and put up no further resistance, Green said. No weapons were found, and neither inmate required medical treatment. Both Evans and Watkins were transferred Monday to Pelican Bay State Prison near Crescent City while the investigation continues, Spirk said. Both men are serving murder sentences from Los Angeles County. Prison officials intend to seek an attempted murder charge against Evans, Green said. |
