Two Take Advantage of Construction, Escape From California Jail

A pair of inmates described as dangerous by sheriff's officials are at large following an escape from the Placer County Jail in Auburn late last week.
Steven Mark Williams, 39, and Daniel Gordon Marshall, 42, each with extensive criminal records, took advantage of construction at the jail and cut a hole in a chain-link fence, Sheriff's Lt. Rick Armstrong said.
'We're currently building a new wing, and one or two of our security systems have been compromised by the construction,' Armstrong said. 'From what we've learned, these guys have been planning this escape for a long time.'
The Sheriff's Department deployed its helicopter and dog teams after discovering the escape about 11 p.m. on June 8, and combed the area around the jail, Armstrong said.
'These are dangerous guys,' the lieutenant said. 'They have a history of violent crimes.'
Both inmates were being held in Placer's jail on charges of armed robbery, Armstrong said.
Williams had been serving a state prison term but was transferred to the Placer County Jail on Jan. 8 to stand trial in a local case, Armstrong said.
Marshall had been in custody since October following an arrest, Armstrong said.
One of the inmates was last seen in the jail's 'E tank' - an open area where inmates mingle -- less than an hour before the escape was discovered.
'Somehow they overcame a part of our security system,' Armstrong said, declining to give details. 'Normally, we have about 15 security systems, but a couple of them are down because of the construction.'
The lieutenant said a brick wall just outside 'E tank' had been removed because of the construction, and a chain-link barrier was put up in its place.
Despite monitoring by video cameras and guards, the two managed to slip unseen through the E tank door, cut a hole in the fence and escape, he said.
The two were wearing orange jumpsuits labeled with the words 'jail inmate' and
'PCSO inmate,' he said.
Williams is described as 5-foot-9 and weighing 142 pounds, with sandy brown hair and green eyes.
Marshall stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 200 pounds. He has blue eyes and his normally brown hair has been shaved off, Armstrong said.
A team of officers from the California Department of Corrections has joined Placer County deputies in the search, the lieutenant said.
