Escaping Also Doesn't Pay, Prison Board Decides
By Philadelphia Inquirer

Lycoming County, Penn. prison inmates who are thinking about escaping have to worry about more than officer patrols and searchlights. They may want to check their bank accounts to see whether they can afford it.
The county Prison Board has decided to begin billing escapees for the costs incurred by prison staff to hunt them down. The minimum cost was estimated at $680.
The new policy was approved recently after a long debate over whether the threat would deter anyone from fleeing when the certainty of at least six months more prison time does not. District Attorney Thomas Marino, the board chairman, said billing escapees would be good penal practice and also would mean justice for taxpayers.
