| Riot in Colombia Prison Leaves 10 Dead, 15 Injured |

Ten inmates were killed and 15 injured in a prison riot in a Bogota jail which broke out after common criminals foiled an escape plan by Marxist guerrilla inmates, the government said on Tuesday. The riot, one of the deadliest in the history of Colombia's troubled prisons, erupted late on Monday and ended after police stormed La Modelo prison on Tuesday. Imprisoned right-wing paramilitaries joined in the riot, in which inmates fired gunshots at each other and hurled grenades and bombs. 'At this point the toll is 10 inmates dead and 15 injured. We are searching the pavilions for weapons,'' Justice Minister Romulo Gonzalez said. Television images showed heavily armed police storming La Modelo, where columns of smoke and fire flared from windows. Outside the prison, relatives clashed with police as news of the dead was made public. After police took control of the complex, inmates were stripped down to their underwear and left in a grassy football field in the chilly Andean afternoon as prison authorities searched cells for weapons. Common criminals at La Modelo have complained to prison officers of abuses at the hands of rebel inmates, authorities said. In a separate incident on Tuesday, two inmates were stabbed to death in a fight in the Villahermosa prison in Cali, Colombia's second-largest city, police said. Colombian prisons are notoriously overcrowded and violent, and clashes between imprisoned leftist guerrillas and their far-right paramilitary foes are common. Low pay makes officers easy prey to corruption and bribes, and many Colombian jails conceal arsenal of weapons. In April of last year, 25 inmates were killed and 18 others were injured in a riot in La Modelo, which has a capacity for 1,800 inmates but houses 5,300 prisoners, many of whom are still awaiting trial. Last week, rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) staged one of the biggest breakouts in Colombian history. About 100 inmates, including 19 FARC rebels, fled after guerrillas bombed a wall of Bogota's La Picota prison. The rebels hurled grenades and fired guns as they sprinted to freedom. The FARC is fighting a 37-year-old war for socialist reforms, and about 40,000 people, mainly civilians, have been killed in the past decade. |
