Published: 07/06/2001

Gary Johnson, a 24-year veteran who worked his way through the ranks from correctional officer to director of the Texas prison system, was recently chosen executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Johnson, 46, succeeds retiring executive director Wayne Scott who is leaving the agency July 31 after five years in the top job. Johnson had followed Scott as director of TDCJ's Institutional Division when Scott, 50, was promoted to executive director in 1996.
'Texas and TDCJ are indeed fortunate to have an administrator of Gary Johnson's stature. Gary exemplifies both the seasoning of proven experience and the energy necessary to continue TDCJ's progress as one of the outstanding criminal justice agencies in the nation,' Board of Criminal Justice chairman Mac Stringfellow of San Antonio said.
Johnson called his appointment 'the greatest honor one can achieve in American corrections, but at the same time it is an awesome responsibility.'
Johnson pledged 'to have no interest other than giving my total best to this agency as the team leader for the finest group of employees and administrators ever assembled in one agency, the hard working and dedicated women and men at every level of TDCJ who accomplish our mission every hour, every day.'
Johnson joined the prison system-then the Texas Department of Corrections-in 1973 as a correctional officer at the Jester Unit. After a brief break in service he rejoined the agency at the Eastham Unit in 1977 and was promoted to sergeant there in 1980.
He was promoted to assistant warden at the Ferguson Unit in 1985. He made senior warden in 1989 at the Galveston hospital unit and later served as warden at Clemens and Ferguson before becoming regional director for South Texas in March, 1995. In 1996 he became director of the Institutional Division.
