| 'Fight club' probed at Md. jail for juveniles |

Two employees of a Maryland jail for juveniles have been fired amid allegations they ran a 'Saturday Morning Fight Club,' pitting teens with drug and alcohol problems against each other to settle disputes with their fists, state officials said recently. A third employee resigned from the privately run facility, and officials said the number of employees found to be involved might grow. One of those accused of staging fights was hired in apparent violation of state policy. Responsible for overseeing teens with addiction problems, the employee has a criminal record for drug distribution, according to a source familiar with an investigation into the allegations. Investigators from the departments of Juvenile Justice and Social Services have been interviewing teens and other employees at the facility, the Victor Cullen Center, in northwest Frederick County. Maryland State Police have conducted a preliminary investigation, said Maj. Greg Shipley, a department spokesman. Detectives will wait for reports from the other agencies before determining whether a criminal probe is warranted, he said. The grounds of Victor Cullen include nine cottages that currently hold about 150 delinquents. The investigation is focused on Silver Charm Cottage, which houses boys with substance abuse problems, Towers said. 'The investigations are under way, and we should have more to say about it shortly,' said Lee Towers, a spokesman for the juvenile justice agency. He declined to comment on specifics of the investigations. Details about what transpired are sketchy, but several fights apparently took place on consecutive Saturdays in the spring. Towers said he did not know whether any youths were injured in the fights. Victor Cullen is operated by Youth Services International, a for-profit division of Correctional Services Corp., headquartered in Sarasota, Fla., which is conducting its own investigation of the fights. Glenn Stoudemire, an area director whose duties include overseeing Victor Cullen, said company officials have been cooperating with investigators. 'We're not trying to hide anything,' he said. The investigation apparently began when a teen from Victor Cullen told a child advocate about the fights in late May, he said. The fights had been occurring for about a month, Stoudemire said, but he disputed reports that officers were organizing them. Instead, it appears officers were allowing teens to fight without intervening, as company policy requires them to do, he said. 'I think it's blown out of proportion,' he said. 'It's unfortunate when some employees make some wrong decisions.' |
