| Phila. Inmate Dies After Attacking Officers at Prison |

An inmate collapsed and died in the infirmary at Graterford Prison after he attacked officers entering his cell and was subdued, prison spokeswoman Leslie Hatcher said yesterday. The attack occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Monday after inmate Fernando White, 47, of Philadelphia, complained to officers that he had not received medication, Hatcher said. Two officers entered White's cell, and he attacked them, striking one in the face, she said. Hatcher said White was subdued and was walking to the prison infirmary when he collapsed. Preliminary autopsy results indicated he suffered a heart attack, she said. White was serving a nine- to 18-year sentence after being convicted of criminal attempted rape in Philadelphia, Hatcher said. |
