A former U.S. attorney who led a federal investigation into alleged brutality at a county jail was named to head a similar state probe. Donald Stern, who left office last month, brought indictments in May against seven officers at the Nashua Street Jail on charges of beating inmates and blocking an investigation into the incidents. The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, which operates the jail, has come under fire for long-standing complaints including alleged brutality, sex with inmates and mismanagement. 'There are very serious allegations, and it appears on the surface that there are some breakdowns in the processes there,' acting Gov. Jane Swift said Thursday. Her appointment of Stern comes amid pressure from inmate advocates, city officials and others, including Suffolk County Sheriff Richard J. Rouse. Stern said the commission of four to six members will focus on 'systemic' problems within the department, such as mismanagement or inadequate supervising or training. Rouse said he was pleased with Swift's choice and that his office will cooperate fully with the commission. 'I welcome the evaluation and any recommendations and I have confidence that this process will help to further the mission of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department,' Rouse said in a statement. |
