A 15-minute pursuit ended on a freeway near Los Angeles International Airport late Tuesday afternoon. 'We were assisting the sheriff's and the FBI, who were dealing with an armed and dangerous suspect,' Hawthorne police Capt. Mike Effler told news wires. 'When he went mobile, we were asked to stop him.' The suspect was identified by the FBI as Keith Darnell Paxton, 38, who escaped from the federal Community Correctional Center in Humboldt County just outside Garberville on July 8. The pursuit began about 5:30 p.m. in Hawthorne, went through Gardena on surface streets, then north on the San Diego (405) Freeway and finally west on the Glenn M. Anderson (105) Freeway, where Paxton tried to make a U-turn. 'We terminated the pursuit at the end of the 105 near LAX,' Effler said, according to wire services. As Paxton turned back to the east, one of the patrol officers in pursuit used his cruiser to nudge the left rear of the suspect's vehicle, which spun out, allowing other officers to quickly pull up and block the man's escape route. Paxton got out, complied with their orders and was quickly arrested. |
