A special salon called Cell-On is located inside the women's prison in Cleveland. The Cleveland prison is a minimum- to medium-security prison where more than 600 inmates are serving anywhere from two years to life. 'If I wouldn't have (gone) to prison when I did, my life would not come close to being on the track that I am on today,' stylist Karen Wright said. 'I know that, and I am woman enough to say that.' Wright is one of the stylists at Cell-On, and she believes that looking good on the outside is as important as feeling good on the inside. There are a lot of firsts for the women at Cell-On, and it's because they are in prison. For some, there's a first job -- everyone in the prison works. For others, there's a first paycheck, although it's not much. And many of them may be learning to take responsibility for their actions for the first time. Many might say that Cell-On is an undeserved luxury, but inmates disagree. While to the outside world it looks like hair care, stylists see something much deeper -- someone who did something ugly and found beauty. State law requires all prison inmates to get a haircut once a month, and the state pays for it. When women go the extra mile at Cell-On, they pay for it with their own money. |
