Two Missouri jail officers were charged Wednesday with urinating on four inmates playing basketball in an indoor recreational area. Justin K. Hastings, 21, and Curtis A. Myers, 26, were both charged with four misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault. Greene County Sheriff Jack Merritt called the Sunday night incident 'a terrible embarrassment' and said both officers had resigned. Inmate Dewayne Zurley called girlfriend Jessica Perkins on Monday and told her that he and three other inmates were playing basketball when the officers urinated on them from a metal grated roof. Merritt said guards routinely patrol the recreational area's roof. 'My boyfriend said he was getting wet and looked up and saw three guards,' Perkins said. 'He said it was disgusting.' The men complained to other officers who investigated, Merrit said. 'This has got to be the sheriff's worst nightmare,' Gay Revi, former president of the local American Civil Liberties Union, said. 'This is the worst nightmare for these inmates ... if this is true.' The officers face a maximum punishment of 60 days in jail and a $1,200 fine if convicted on all four counts. |
