Inmates took four officers hostage and demanded a helicopter to escape from a western Mexico jail in an uprising that left four people dead, including two of the hostages. Convicted murderer Jose Luis Mancilla threatened to kill the officers unless prison officials supplied a group of 12 inmates with a helicopter and loaded assault rifles, local media reported Thursday. After authorities failed to meet the demand, Mancilla reportedly shot two officers in the head and then committed suicide. Another inmate died of gunshot wounds, according to media reports. Riot police stormed the municipal jail in Tamazula, 280 miles southwest of Mexico City, and state police regained control over the wing of the facility where Wednesday's three-hour standoff occurred. The small jail was overcrowded and officers had previously complained about security risks there. Mancilla's mother reportedly smuggled in the pistols used in the uprising, according to media reports. Two other officers injured in the standoff were listed in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the head. Two inmates were hospitalized. |
