Seventeen inmates and officers at a Nevada women's prison cut their hair so the locks could be used for making wigs for Nevada youngsters battling cancer. Instead, their contributions will benefit children with a balding disorder. The volunteers each donated 10 inches or more of their hair to the nonprofit Locks of Love, which makes wigs for children who've lost their hair because of medical reasons. But it was only after the cutting was done that inmates and guards at the Southern Nevada Women's Correctional Facility in Las Vegas learned the organization doesn't provide hairpieces for chemotherapy patients. The group has helped 400 children nationwide since 1997, but most have a balding disorder called alopecia. The intended beneficiaries of the prison's July 2 cut-a-thon were young victims of a cancer cluster in Fallon, a northern Nevada farming and Navy town where more than a dozen children are being treated for acute lymphocytic leukemia. One boy died of the disease and authorities are still searching for clues that might explain the high number of cases diagnosed. Assistant Prison Warden Robert Paige, who coordinated the cut-a-thon, said he contacted Locks of Love about the rules for donations but didn't realize how the hair would be used. The inmates agreed to donate their 19 bags of hair to Locks of Love anyway. |
