Jail inmates strangled a fellow prisoner because they feared he would expose their plan to escape by chiseling through a wall, authorities said. Michael Kelly Deal, 54, a former police officer who was in jail on a charge of failing to pay child support, was found hanging by a bedsheet in his cell July 24. Chatham County authorities initially believed Deal committed suicide, but investigators now believe he was strangled with a bandage outside his cell, then dragged inside and strung up, Sheriff Al St. Lawrence said. Seven other inmates were in the protective custody area in the jail unit where Deal was found. They were trying to escape by chiseling through the concrete around a window, investigators said. Deal's cell was one of eight in the unit, which also has an area with picnic tables and a television. Inmates can roam about that area until cells are locked down at 11 p.m., St. Lawrence said. Deal was found about 10 p.m. |
