Inmates Shot During French Jail Break

A watch tower warden shot and wounded inmates at a French jail Monday as riot police were drafted in to quash a revolt, prison officials said.
About a dozen prisoners were hurt during the uprising, including two or three who suffered serious gunshot wounds, said officials at the jail in the southern region of Provence.
'We had to open fire to prevent escapes, especially when one of them flung up a grappling iron,'' said a prison warden union official.
About 100 of the 600 inmates at the jail were involved in the violence and some managed to get past one of the jail's internal perimeters. No one managed to escape.
The revolt was believed to have been sparked by unrest following the death last week of a young prisoner who died after setting his bed alight.
