The Department of the Youth Authority began its first 16-week Correctional Peace Officer Basic Academy on July 30, 2001 at the Youth Authority Training Center in Stockton, Calif. The recently appointed correctional peace officer cadets begin a rigorous 640 hour training program, now mandatory for anyone who will be assigned to a post in the Department's correctional facilities as a youth correctional officer, youth correctional counselor, casework specialist, medical technical assistant, or parole agent. It is believed this new academy series is the longest and most comprehensive juvenile justice training academy in the U.S. Until now, the Youth Authority Basic Academy lasted only 200 hours over five weeks. The expanded Basic Academy requirements are a direct result of AB 271, authored by Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa (D-Los Angeles) and signed into law by Gov. Pete Wilson on Sept. 22, 1998. The law requires newly appointed cadets to attend an academy training program that has been approved by the Commission on Correctional Peace Officer Standards and Training (CPOST). |
