Every year up to 5,000 first-time offenders and poor criminal defendants avoid spending a night in the Tarrant County Jail through a unique program that gives them a get-out-of-jail-for-almost-free card. Accused of crimes such as shoplifting, writing bad checks and other nonviolent crimes, defendants in the county's pretrial release program pay a tiny portion of what they would have to pay a bail bondsman. Judges, attorneys and county officials praise the program, saying it provides a quick way for some defendants to stay out of jail on charges that are, in about half of the cases, not filed or are ultimately dismissed. |
