A female officer at Michigan's Thumb Correctional Facility attacked recently by an inmate received some unusual help - from other inmates. The corrections officer, who was not identified, was jumped by an inmate who was walking to a bathroom and suddenly turned and attacked her about 2:30 a.m. on August 14, said state police Sgt. Larry Carrick. Nearby inmates and corrections officers descended on the scene and stopped the assault. The inmate was taken into custody, Carrick said. The corrections officer was treated at the Lapeer hospital for cuts and bruises. State police said there was no motive for the attack, which occurred moments after the corrections officer passed the inmate in a hallway. The inmate, 24, was in prison after a conviction on charges of armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct and home invasion. After the attack the man, who was not injured, was moved to another prison. After completion of the investigation, the case will be reviewed by the Lapeer County Prosecutor for possible charges, police said. The name of the prisoner was withheld pending warrants. Prisoners in the area where the attack occurred share a common area and are not in individual cells, state police said. State police said as a precaution there was a short lockdown of inmates following the assault. |
