The second of two inmates who escaped from an Arkansas state prison was captured Saturday while crawling through a cotton field, prison officials said. Bobby Green, 51, had a handgun but did not attempt to use it, prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said. Green was returned to the prison in Varner, about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock, Tyler said. The field is about 20 miles from the prison. Green and Joseph D. Davis, 39, jumped an officer Thursday, stole the officer's truck and kidnapped an off-duty corrections officer and his daughter, officials said. The officer and daughter were released unharmed and the other officer was not seriously hurt. Davis was captured the day of the escape and apparently committed suicide in his cell Friday. Green was sentenced in 1984 to 40 years in prison for aggravated robbery and theft, but escaped in 1994, Tyler said. He was captured in Illinois, imprisoned on a robbery conviction and mistakenly freed in 1999. He was arrested the next year in California on bank robbery charges and was returned to Arkansas last October. |
