Eighteen prisoners have died of tuberculosis (TB) in India's northeastern state of Assam in the past 5 months, the chairman of the Assam Human Rights Commission said recently. A majority of the prisoners suffered from the disease because of negligence by jail authorities and doctors, Justice R. K. Manisana Singh said. 'Our commission has recorded the deaths of 18 under trials suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis from March until the middle of August this year,' he said. Assam's health minister, Dr. Bhumidhar Burma, said the government would order an inquiry into the matter. 'I have asked doctors posted in prisons to regularly monitor the medical condition of the prisoners,' Burma said. Tuberculosis is the most common cause of death among prisoners in Assam, the human rights official added. 'We have asked the jail authorities to carry out medical examinations, particularly for TB, of the inmates and maintain proper medical records of each individual,' Justice Singh said. |
