Fist fights among inmates broke out at the Nashua Street Jail after some consistently bullied their locked-up counterparts for canteen snacks, a jail spokesman said recently. 'There was a rumble of about 12 to 20 guys,'' said Rick Lombardi, spokesman for Suffolk County Sheriff Richard Rouse. 'Apparently some of the inmates were strong-arming others for their snacks . . so they got tired of that and decided to lash back,'' he said. Lombardi said the confrontation, which lasted between five and 10 minutes Saturday night, sent one inmate to the hospital as a precaution. He was treated and released within hours. Two correction officers reported slight injuries as they tried to break up the fight. They were not transported to the hospital. 'There were no weapons involved and it was put down pretty quickly,'' Lombardi said. Some inmates were separated and placed into a disciplinary unit. He said it was unclear whether the effort to rob inmates of their snacks was an organized effort or gang-related. 'We're still investigating. It's basically a bunch bullying others,'' he said, adding that inmate-on-inmate fights are rare at Nashua Street. 'We have them sporadically. We generally don't have them this large,'' he said. 'This one came to a head pretty quickly.'' |
