In a scene straight out of Hollywood, a gang of heavily armed men slammed a truck into the wall of a prison in the center of Rio de Janeiro on Monday, freeing 14 inmates. The gang blocked traffic with one truck and hijacked an urban bus to block traffic coming from the other direction before tearing through the wall at the Polinter prison before dawn on Monday, officials said. The truck punched a hole in the prison wall, through which the prisoners fled on foot, officials said. A police spokesman said they suspect the gang of 15 men was trying to spring a Colombian drug dealer known only as Papito, or ``Little Daddy,'' considered one of Rio's major drug dealers and among the group that escaped. The Polinter prison near downtown Rio houses more than 1,000 inmates. Jail escapes are fairly common in Brazil where prison guards are poorly paid and under-trained, according to human rights groups. Tunnels and truck demolitions are two frequent methods used to spring inmates. |
