In a bid to escape from a police station in Dubai, United Arab Emirates detainees started a fire that killed 14 inmates and injured 18 other people, authorities said Tuesday. Three officers were among those injured by the fire that overwhelmed the cells in a Dubai police station basement late Monday, police said. The prisoners were drug addicts awaiting trial. They had tried to commit suicide several weeks ago and had planned the escape because they were suffering withdrawal symptoms from not having access to drugs, officials said. They set fire to a foam mattress and the deaths were caused by smoke inhalation, police said. Policemen who tried to fight the fire were hampered by the heavy smoke. The injured were admitted to a hospital for smoke inhalation where their condition was described as stable Tuesday. The victims include seven Emirates nationals, two Iranians, two Afghans and three stateless nomadic Arabs, the police officer said. Dubai is one of seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. |
