Four Hawaiian women inmates who said they were sexually assaulted by prison officers in Oklahoma will not be allowed to pursue their lawsuit in Hawaii. The four said they were abused at the privately-run Central Oklahoma correctional facility -- they'd been sent there to relieve overcrowding at Hawaii prisons. Their lawyer wanted the lawsuit tried in Hawaii, saying Hawaii inmates couldn't get a fair trial in Oklahoma, where prisons are a major industry. 'It's their hometown; it's part of their economy there,' inmates' attorney Michael Green said. 'I don't know if I want to buy cowboy boots and a 10-gallon hat; it's going to be very difficult.' 'It's not a matter of fairness from the jury standpoint, but just a convenience for the parties, expenses, documents and logistics,' prison's attorney Michael Lam said. Judge David Ezra agreed with the mainland-prison company. The trial will be held in federal court in either Tulsa or Oklahoma City. |
