City to free inmates to ease crowding

Prisoners will be set free as early as today because there is no room in Denver's two chronically cramped lockups.
Twenty inmates who are within 10 days of completing their sentences for nonviolent crimes have been chosen for release, said Fred Oliva, Denver's undersheriff and director of corrections.
Oliva said he met Wednesday with Denver County Court judges to inform them of the releases. The discharges are not a reaction to voters' rejection Tuesday of a new jail but are based on safety concerns, he said.
'I have to ensure the safety of my staff and the inmates we're supposed to take care of,' Oliva said.
