An 18-year-old student who wounded five people in a shooting rampage at his high school earlier this year hanged himself with a bed sheet in his jail cell recently, authorities said. Jason Hoffman, who had a history of mental illness, was found dead at San Diego's Central Jail, where he had been in a cell by himself. He left behind writings that indicated 'he was displeased with the world,' said Lt. Jerry Lewis. Last month, Hoffman pleaded guilty in the March 22 shooting at Granite Hills High School in the San Diego suburb of El Cajon. His sentencing had been set for Nov. 8. He could have gotten 27 years to life in prison. William Trainor, Hoffman's lawyer, said the teen-ager was 'extraordinarily remorseful for what he did.' Hoffman opened fire in an attack apparently aimed at the school's dean of students. The reason was never fully explained. After his arrest, Hoffman was held in a padded 'safety cell' because of concerns he might hurt himself. A doctor later ruled he could be held in the type of cell where he was found dead. Lewis said that move was not recent. |
