The jail inmate who posed as actor Eddie Murphy in order to escape from a downtown Los Angeles jail was sentenced Wednesday to 65-years-to-life on an attempted murder charge. Kevin Jerome Pullum, 31, was not sentenced on his escape from the Twin Towers jail, but on an attempted murder charge stemming from a 1999 shooting. Surrounded by sheriff's deputies, the shackled defendant asked Superior Court Judge John Fisher to throw out the jury's guilty verdict, set a new trial, dismiss his attorney and direct the deputies to leave the courtroom. Pullum was convicted of shooting a man six times in 1999. His criminal record dates to 1982 and includes robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and possessing a weapon illegally, according to a local news service. In July, Pullum escaped from jail with a fake employee identification, in which he used a newspaper picture of Eddie Murphy from 'Dr. Doolittle 2.' He donned street clothes, which he had worn for his court appearance when he was convicted in the attempted murder charges. With the identification and the street clothes, Pullum was able to walk right out of the jail. His bold move came just hours after his conviction.. Pullum, after being on the loose for 16 days, was found and arrested. He still faces trial on the prison escape charges. |
