Former Indiana Jailer Behind Bars for Aiding Escape

A former jail officer accused of giving an inmate a handcuffs key as part of an escape plot has found herself on the other side of the bars.
Bethany Renee Shrack, 27, was booked in the Delaware County Jail -- her former workplace -- recently on preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit escape, trafficking with an inmate and assisting a criminal.
Shrack resigned in late June after about nine months on the job. She stepped down after an internal investigation into allegations that she had passed a handcuff key to inmate Veshon Hicks.
Hicks, 27, had been convicted of 14 burglary-related charges a few weeks before he allegedly was provided with the key. He has since been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
County police received an anonymous tip in June about the handcuffs key, investigators said.
A 'very well hidden' key was found in Hicks' cell after several searches, Pyle said.
Police also found letters Shrack allegedly had written to Hicks. Shrack admitted to a county police investigator that she had given Hicks the key, arrest records said. Shrack told the investigator that she and Hicks had become friends during his stay in jail.
