After getting choked up over a documentary on Brazil's homeless going hungry, 800 inmates at a maximum-security prison in Rio de Janeiro decided to donate their lunches once a month to a food bank, the director of the prison said recently. 'Despite being dangerous criminals, they are also human beings and they were touched when they saw images of all those starving people,' Roberto Nunes, director of the Helio Gomes Prison, told Reuters. 'They decided to donate their lunches on the last Friday of every month to show their solidarity,' he said. Brazilian inmates are better known for their daring escapes and deadly riots than for their philanthropy. Earlier this year more than 20,000 inmates took their own families hostage in a series of prison uprisings that ended with 19 dead. But for the first time last Friday, the inmates at Helio Gomes donated their lunch of rice, beans, potatoes and a tripe stew. In total, 660 pounds (300 kg) of food and 720 fresh oranges were shipped off to the Rio Food Bank, Nunes said. The food bank distributes free lunches to some 30 institutions for the homeless and the poor. |
