2012 Conference Highlights

Once again, our annual training conference held March 25-28, 2012 in Myrtle Beach, SC was a huge success. It was attended by approximately 200 participants and trainers, and supported by 54 businesses and service organizations. This year a record amount was raised in support of our H.T. Leary Education Scholarship. One of our many supporters, Mediko PC, donated a whopping $4,500.00 for our famous "Scholarship Pig", which happened to be signed by Oprah Winfrey while she was visiting the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center a few days prior to the conference. A second supporter, Southern Health Partners, gave a direct cash donation of $3,000.00 toward the scholarship fund. Altogether, $8,500.30 was raised during our Annual Scholarship Auction.

This year was also an election year. Our outgoing President, Janice B. Ergle (Director, Saluda Co. Detention Center), received a standing ovation as she marked the end of her two-year term. She expressed her sincere thanks for all the support she received and the opportunity to serve. W. Christopher Hudson (Director, Laurens Co. Detention Center), took the helm as President for 2012-2014. He too expressed thanks for having the opportunity to serve and promised to continue to move the Association forward along a positive path.

Ronaldo D. Myers, CJM (Director, Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center-Richland Co.), assumed the position of Vice President. Shelton L. Hughes, Jr., CJM (Director, Clarendon Co. Detention Center), remained on as Secretary for a third consecutive term and Earl Hood, (Director, Marlboro Co. Detention Center), remained on as Treasurer for a sixth consecutive term. All candidates for office had no opposition.

Our 2012 Jail Administrator of the Year was Mitch Lucas, CJM (Director, Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center-Charleston Co.). Director Lucas expressed his gratitude and thanked his staff and the Association for the tremendous support he has received since assuming command of detention center operations.

Activities
Sunday, March 25, 2012, our 5:00 pm opening session will feature Kelvin Washington, US Marshal for the state of SC. A Vendors' Reception will follow in the Palisades beginning at 6:00 pm. Monday evening will feature our Annual Scholarship Auction and Karaoke. Our theme for Monday evening will be Blues/Jazz Night with live performances and a Blues Brothers contest. Get your cool, jazzy attire ready to go! Our Awards Luncheon will be held on Tuesday at 12:00 pm.
