Topic: The Club House / What to Expect??? O_O I am not even in the US but the way it works here is they draw up a panel of candidates. Those with the highest score get called for interview first and so on as they work their way down the list until they reach the quota they require for that intake. Then if you pass the interview you are called for the medical and phyical test pass thoses and you begin 12 weeks training in the academy including 2 weeks induction training in a Prison. Pass all the exams in the academy and after your 12 weeks you are assigned to a Prison. |

Topic: The Club House / A sad state. Unlike you Justus I don’t want to be their friend. They were sent to prison because society has decided that they are unfit to live among decent people. I have been doing this Job long enough to know that the only thing that they respect is strength. I have seen your type come and go. The lags play the game with you smile and pretend to like you to your face but laugh at you behind your back because they see you as an easy touch. And as for being sexist far from it. I have the greatest respect for some of the Female Officers I work with. They are the equal of any Male Officer I have ever worked with. Why. Because the won’t take any shit from the prisoners. |

Topic: The Club House / Starting Career in Corrections Not at all giants2008. I joined the Job when I was 30 and am still in it 14 years later. But you might find that this job is a much different prospect than your present profession. What I would suggest is to talk to some of the guys that work in Rikers. And have a read of a book called “Holding the Key”. As for joining each Dept is a little diffrent in what it wants but with a degree you would be (if I am not mistaken) eligible for the Feds. |

Topic: The Club House / A sad state. A Sad State. Yes it is when prison is no longer a deterrent to criminals. Where convicted scum have more rights that the Officers that put their lives on the line every day to contain these vermin. |

Topic: The Club House / Medical Exam They may not test for HIV but on most Medical questionaires they will ask about pre-existing medical conditions and failure to admit this would be grounds for immediate dismissal. |

Topic: Everything Education / New Officer When you first enter the prison they see “Fresh Meat”. And unfortunately there is nothing you can do about that. Just be firm. Use the tone of your voice to let them know you will brook no dissension. And remember they may be in a Gang. But so are you and your Gang is bigger and you have the full weight of the law behind you. |

Topic: A Broader View / Employment in Corrections... We see all of what Campi was saying because we deal with the underbelly of society. Most civilians live their lives and rarely if ever see the darker side of human nature that we work with on a daily basis. To them we are characters in a National Geographic/ Discovery Channel documentary or Sadistic/Incompetent characters in some movie or drama. And what they see on TV is “Not Real”. If only they could see the un-edited versions of those Documentaries they might get some inkling of what we do. |

Topic: A Broader View / Employment in Corrections... Hi Josh. My advice to you would be to leave Law Enforcement alone for a few more years. Especially Corrections. At 19 you are still very young and our profession can at times be brutal both physically and mentally. |

Topic: The Club House / The Concerns of Inmates As far as inmates are concerned I don’t do any form of “Pathy”. I am not there to be their Friend/Councilor/Mentor or General hand holder. If an inmate loses their sanity, gets hurt or dies will I lose any sleep? Ahh. No! Do I care if he receives visits or has someone to talk to on the phone? Again No. They chose to commit the offense that got them put in prison. They made their bed now they have to lay in it. |

Topic: Everything Education / Stay Connected To Lower Recidivism Rates One problem with that. As it here happens many of the Family & Friends visiting are themselves career criminals. And as such re-enforce their criminal behavior. And I think you posted in the wrong forum. This is a Correctional Officers forum not a “Lets be friends with Dirtbirds” forum. |

Topic: Security Central / Contraband Bust Slim The Burgers are what I found surprising. I know that most prisons wouldn’t allow food from outside to be given to inmates. And deducing from what you said about the Burgers not being contaband for staff . I would be inclined to think that a member of staff or family member of staff was involved |

Topic: The Club House / Why??? LOL Wait until you come across your first “Dirty Protest”. The other day we had one inmate smear himself in his own feaces as protest. You could smell the guy from 10 feet away. That is usually the straw that breaks the camels back for a lot of ppl |

Topic: Security Central / Contraband Bust Good Bust. Were the Back packs being left in for inmates or tossed over the fence? And if they were being left in is food from outside the prison permitted? |

Topic: A Broader View / Writing a Book. You would be amazed at the amount of Mothers and even Grandmothers we have caught bringing in Drugs. " Because He had the Sickness".(Withdrawls). What people forget inmates are master manipulaters. And can’t believe that they are being used. |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Washing your hands Why on Earth would want to touch one of those creatures with your bare hands. As you have said Jamestown they have every disease known and diseases probably yet to be discovered. |
