Brother Back in Colo. Jail After Swapping IDs

A fugitive who duped deputies at the Denver County Jail by switching identities with his brother is back behind bars nearly 4 1/2 years after his inventive escape.
Steve Cabello, 29, was arrested last week after he was spotted at his mother's home. Considered a flight risk, he is being held apart from the general population, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Darryle Brown said Sunday. 'There's so many charges, you lose count,' Brown said. 'He'll be here for a while.'
Cabello, who is wanted in connection with a fatal drive-by shooting in Texas 10 years ago, skipped free from the Denver jail in July 1998 after trading clothes and jewelry with his younger brother, Efrain, who was being held on a separate traffic charge.
Steve Cabello had the same signature as his brother and answered several questions, including birthday and his mother's maiden name, so deputies let him post his brother's $300 bond and walk away. Detectives discovered the mix-up when they began questioning Efrain Cabello, posing as Steve, at jail.
A few days later, police captured a man who they thought was Steve Cabello. Turned out, they had yet a third brother, Efrain's twin, Edward.
Steve Cabello has been on the run ever since.
He is now awaiting extradition to San Antonio, Texas, where he is wanted for murder, aggravated assault and attempt to commit capital murder, all in connection with a August 1993 shooting.
Investigators there have accused Cabello of driving the car used in the shooting. Two others opened fire on a porch full of people, killing Mario How, 21, and wounding three others, including a 3-month-old boy.
Under Texas and Colorado law, an accessory, such as a driver, is just as culpable as the person who pulls the trigger.
The 1993 Texas shooting also brought grief to Cabello's family. Four years later, in 1997, Cabello's father was killed and his mother wounded when gunfire erupted outside their home. San Antonio police suspected the violence may have been in retaliation for the previous shooting. The status of that case could not be determined Sunday.
The family moved to the Denver area after the father's death.
Steve Cabello is being held without bail on the charges from Texas. He is also facing an escape charge in Denver. Bail in that case is set at $500,000.

Do you know someone who has been arrested in Waco or McLennan County? It’s important to find a good Waco lawyer to represent you in the matter involving your own liberty. Look for the best Waco lawyer that you can find. Whether you have been accused rightly or wrongly, it’s important to know your legal rights that concern whether you go to jail.
