Forget about rock hammers, secret tunnels and cheesecake posters of actress Rita Hayworth. Forget everything you've learned about prison escapes from Hollywood. The inmates at the Stanley Correctional Institution have come up with a much more efficient way to spring hardcore felons from their ranks. Last month, authorities said, two inmates simply walked out of the medium-security prison in northwestern Wisconsin by using fake prison release records. Stanley staffers processed the paperwork and let the two go. One of those who escaped the state-run facility had as much as 50 years remaining on his sentence. "This has never happened as far as I know," said Stanley Police Chief Roy Fredrickson last week regarding the prison, which the state bought in 2001 from the private company that built it. "That's why I want to get to the bottom of it." Hey, who needs early release when you can forge release documents? State Department of Corrections officials are being tight-lipped about the embarrassing incident, except to say the two escapees since have been caught and are in custody. They declined to release the names of the felons, any information about their offenses or the dates they escaped. The prison has about 1,500 inmates and nearly 400 state workers. Read More. |
