Haitian Jails In Rough Shape, Overcrowded

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Haitian jails are filled with inmates who have not made appearances before judges because of the Jan. 12 earthquake, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The newspaper said the country's judicial system was brought to a halt by the quake, when Port-au-Prince's courthouse was leveled. Now, it said, more than half of the 81 prisoners at the capital's main police station are housed in a makeshift cell and has become a scene of squalor.

The Post said one prisoner, Bouzy Archange Jr., said from behind its bars, "It's hell. H-E-L-L," and noting that two prisoners fighting each other nearby is something that happens all the time.
