A clash between armed rival gangs in a Mexican jail left five inmates dead and 14 injured, authorities in northern Chihuahua state said. Some 300 soldiers and police took several hours to control Tuesday's unrest in the Aquiles Serdan state prison, said Gustavo Zabre, the state head of public security. Riots are common in Mexican prisons, which are often overcrowded and divided up by members of powerful drug gangs. Twenty four people died in a riot in a notorious prison in the Mexican state of Durango in January, also during a clash between rival gangs. Some 15,000 people have died in suspected drug violence across Mexico since the end of 2006, amid a military crackdown on organised crime involving some 50,000 troops. Read More. |
