A Tennessee corrections officer is recovering from severe knife wounds after being stabbed by a death row inmate Wednesday morning.
A Riverbend corrections officer was taken to the hospital with numerous lacerations to his left arm after he was stabbed around 7:30 am Wednesday, while attempting to handcuff Henry Hodges who was convicted for killing a male nurse back in 1992.
Riverbend warden Ricky Bell said, "We have what we call a pie flap on the security door, and the inmate Hodges reached through the door and grabbed the officer."
Bell says that Hodges struck for no apparent reason with a makeshift weapon he had in his cell.
This incident is just one of many times Hodges has been in trouble since he came into the system. He's had 34 offenses since 1984. Since 1996, Hodges is accused of assaulting prison staff four times. He's been caught twice with a deadly weapon, and has had at least four drug violations while incarcerated, including possession of drugs and positive drug screenings. And there are numerous incidents of creating a disturbance, as well as fighting.
Prison officials say that they have no idea what prompted this latest attack. The officer supposedly got along well with Hodges, and was getting ready to let Hodges out of his cell for the one hour of exercise allowed each day. Now Bell is trying to decide how to punish the Death Row prisoner - who really doesn't have anything to lose.
